Speak Greek

It’s fun learning a few words in another language. It impresses the waiters, tickles the love interest, and makes the natives sit up and take notice. But misunderstandings and malapropisms are bound to happen, in English and in Greek. And pronunciation matters!! MaryAnne Kokidis brings some helpful suggestions - and warnings - to the table when we Speak Greek.

Greek Lent 101

Growing up, I was amazed at how little was known about the Orthodox Church outside. Literally, most Americans still have no idea who or what we are. Great Lent is a HUGE deal in Greek culture, shaping our religious life, home life and even our view of the world. And our Greekness has shaped how we observe Lent, from preparation for the coming fast to the food we eat for over 40 days. And whether you’re practicing the religion or not, if you’re Greek, it’s part of who you are.

I invite you to learn about our customs and why we do the things we do. And we’ll talk food. Because we’re Greek.

Greek Like Me Episode 2: Look Greek

A few of my favorite Greek stereotypes. We’re not all plate-throwing diner owners! What’s worse? Being stereotyped by non-Greeks or navigating the Greek Community when you don’t look Greek (I’m a Stealth Greek!) Polishing my “Kiss Me, I’m Greek” badge to cut through the confusion.
